The Mission to Seafarers (MtS) is continuing its commitment to the safety of the maritime industry by providing English lessons to seafarers which will enhance the future of safety on board vessels. The scheme, which operates out of the charity’s Seafarers’ Centre in Myanmar is on target to teach English skills to 400 seafarers by end of 2018.
Speaking about MtS’ English programme in Myanmar, Mr Ben Bailey, Director of Advocacy and Regional Engagement for the maritime charity said: “The programme is aimed at improving the English skills for seafarers, which will enhance future safety on board ships. The Mission to Seafarers has invested in this service as we understand that the importance of communication at sea is ensuring the highest of safety standards and in helping seafarers secure employment.
“Miscommunication can lead to disaster especially during an emergency which is why we have placed such importance in rolling out this project.”
In addition to the English skills programme for seafarers, MtS Myanmar also teaches the wives of seafarers English and sewing skills, providing them with skills to generate income at home whilst caring for their families
Mr Bailey is currently in Manila, The Philippines, as part of a panel at the CrewConnect Global Conference on Wednesday 7th November, where he will discuss with other panellists the importance of crew wellbeing and safety.
