Wellbeing Courses for Seafarers

WeCare Training Courses for Seafarers

The life of a seafarer is by no means easy as they face lengthy spells away from their families with limited communication opportunities whilst battling often challenging conditions. This can impact their wellbeing, resulting in feelings of anxiety, depression, and in worst cases, thoughts of suicide.

To combat this, we have launched the WeCare programme in partnership with UK P&I Club which aims to provide wellbeing training for seafarers to help them learn to cope with these situations better.

These courses are available free of charge to UK P&I Club members and are also available to non-members for a small donation. The programme consists of two courses –financial wellbeing and social wellbeing, delivered across workshops, seminars, and e-learning. The most popular of these courses was taken by over 6,000 seafarers or their family members in 2019 alone.

Our Wellbeing Training for Seafarers

We currently offer two separate wellbeing training courses for seafarers. Both of these courses ultimately look to help seafarers deal with life’s complications and improve their wellbeing.

The most subscribed course is our social wellbeing course which provides education on the impact that long distance relationships can have on wellbeing. This programme aims to provide training to seafarers on how to cope with such situations as well as providing insights into actions that can be taken on both sides of the relationship to reduce the negative consequences that long distance relationships can have on mental health. The impact that Social media can have is also explored, with training provided on the pros and cons which should be taken into consideration when using such platforms.

The other course explores financial wellbeing, providing tips on taking stock of our finances, creating budgets and building a savings plan. Ultimately this course aims to awaken seafarers as to the impact that financial matters can have on their mental health. By providing better education on managing such issues it is hoped that the strain faced will ultimately be reduced.

Mix of Learning Styles

We know that not everyone learns best from the same style of teaching. That is why we offer a mix of education formats when we deliver training courses for seafarers.

One option is via e-learning, with two sixty minute courses being delivered along with downloadable resources. In keeping with the online theme, we also deliver webinars which promote wellbeing through encouraging learner participation.

Those who prefer one to one teaching methods may instead prefer to opt for our one day workshops where we deliver four modules of training for seafarers who will receive a WeCare book and certificate upon successfully completing the training course.

Ship Management Training

We also deliver face to face training for seafarers who are members of ship management or provide training for other seafarers. This is called Training for Trainers (T4T) and is a two day course where we educate participants in how to deliver specific aspects of our WeCare programme to help the dissemination of our mental health management teachings.

Over the two days, participants listen to presentations, take part in mock exercises and participate in lesson planning. Education is also provided on monitoring crew welfare and also recommended reporting procedures to raise concerns.

Successful completion of this course is signified by the trainee receiving a T4T certificate, WeCare trainers manual and an information pack.
